Metal fans keep the scene alive, no matter how much mainstream attention we get, says Avatar's Johannes Eckerström. In an interview with Spain's Rock FM, Eckerström addressed the widespread perception that heavy metal has declined in popularity. He argued that the opposite is true, citing the success of bands like Gojira and Lorna Shore, who have achieved significant mainstream recognition while maintaining their extreme musical style. Eckerström also highlighted the enduring nature of metal culture, noting that it has a rebellious and timeless quality that will always find an audience. He recalled a Swedish music journalist's book from the early 2000s, which described metal fans as a resilient and enduring community, even in the face of societal changes. Eckerström emphasized that metal fans remain dedicated to the genre, even as it gains or loses mainstream attention. Avatar's upcoming tenth studio album, 'Don't Go In The Forest,' is set for release on October 31 via Black Waltz Records. The album features new songs and concepts, reflecting the band's exploration of dark themes and forbidden thoughts. Avatar will embark on a U.S. tour this fall, followed by tours supporting Iron Maiden and Metallica, as well as a major show in Mexico City. Eckerström's comments highlight the resilience and enduring appeal of metal culture, even as it evolves and gains new levels of mainstream recognition.
