Belinda Bencic's stunning victory over Iga Swiatek has put Switzerland on the brink of a historic United Cup championship! This electrifying match showcased Bencic's resilience and determination, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. She's now a perfect 9-0 in the tournament, with an impressive five singles wins.
Bencic's comeback win against the world's number two, Swiatek, was nothing short of spectacular, with a final score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. This victory puts Switzerland just one win away from their first-ever United Cup title.
But here's where it gets interesting: the pressure is now on Stan Wawrinka, who must defeat Hubert Hurkacz in the men's singles match. If Hurkacz wins, Poland could avoid losing their third consecutive United Cup final.
Bencic herself admitted it was a challenge playing against Swiatek, stating, "I think the difference today was I played very freely, I was really enjoying myself out on the court and I was just really going for it." This marks Bencic's first win against Swiatek in over four years.
Bencic's dominant performance saw her win 12 of the final 15 games, earning her a second career victory over the World No. 2 on the WTA Tour and a second top 10 win of the season, after defeating Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the group stage. The match began with Swiatek taking the lead, but the momentum quickly shifted.
Swiatek initially held serve, but Bencic fought back, winning two consecutive games. Despite Swiatek's initial lead, Bencic turned the tide, winning the second set with a remarkable 6-0 score, forcing a deciding third set. Bencic started the second set winning nine consecutive points.
Bencic's strategy of staying focused paid off, as she explained, "I think I just tried to keep the level and just wait for some chances." She secured a crucial break in the third set and eventually clinched the victory with a powerful backhand winner. Swiatek fought until the end, but Bencic's performance proved too strong.
It's worth noting that Swiatek had an uncharacteristic 36 unforced errors, compared to Bencic's 10.
