Coronation Street writer teases return for controversial family after dramatic exit plots
Coronation Street writer Jan McVerry has hinted at a return for the Michaelis family, just months after the controversial couple, Mick and Lou, were locked up in prison. The couple's explosive introduction in February 2025, billed as 'nightmare neighbours', brought a lot of drama, with viewers hating them. However, their departure left a lasting impact with the character of Brody, and the writer confirms that the family's story is not over.
In an interview on the Stateside Street podcast, McVerry said, "We brought in the Michaelis family, him [Mick] and Lou, [it was] very explosive, hit the ground running. The viewers hated them, but they brought a lot of drama with them, and they've left us a great legacy with Brody. It's not the end of the family. We are going to hear from them again."
The Michaelis family, played by Joe Layton and Farrel Hegarty, were introduced in February 2025, following their move to Mawdsley Street. The couple's abusive relationship and subsequent imprisonment for the murder of PC Craig Tinker and the attack on Kit Green created a dramatic arc. Lou's character was also involved in an attack on Gary Windass, putting him in a coma, leading to her imprisonment and the character's conclusion.
McVerry revealed that the writers had always known they had limited time with the Michaelis family, especially with Mick's other commitments. She said, "Our hands were tied with Mick, who I thought was a really, really good actor because he had another job to go to. He had some theatre work to go to, unfortunately for us, so we knew there was a ticking clock, and at this point, we were going to have to release the actor. Sometimes that's really helpful, because you know that you're going to crank up the pace of the story and it's going to end there, and it's very helpful to know that you've got something to work towards."
Despite the limited time, the writer's hints at a potential return for the controversial family, leaving fans curious about the future of the Michaelis family on Coronation Street.
