Recent events at Rockstar North paint a picture of internal turmoil. The company recently terminated 34 employees from its UK and Canada offices, accusing them of "gross misconduct." This move sparked immediate backlash, including a protest outside Take-Two's London headquarters organized by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB). The anonymous Rockstar employee, fearing retaliation, posted a scathing account on GTA Forums (https://gtaforums.com/topic/1004182-rockstar-games-alleged-union-busting/), detailing what they describe as a depressing and demoralizing atmosphere within the studio. The employee's identity remains private, but their employment status was verified by a forum moderator.
According to this insider, the fired employees were summoned to brief HR meetings, where they received envelopes containing their termination notices, citing "gross misconduct." The letters allegedly lacked specific reasons for the dismissal, and Rockstar reportedly refused to provide further clarification upon request. And this is the part most people miss... the terminated employees were allegedly denied union representation during this process and were then escorted out of the studio. Staff members who weren't physically present at the studio received the news via brief, two-minute phone calls, with one reportedly suffering a panic attack as a result. Some of those dismissed were even on sick leave, recovering from surgery, or on paternity leave, according to the forum post.
The timing of these dismissals, especially with the holiday season approaching, couldn't be worse, the anonymous employee stated. They also adamantly denied that any confidential information about Rockstar or its projects was shared within the trade union Discord server. Their conversations, they claim, were solely focused on unionization efforts and the current working conditions at the company.
The anonymous employee suggests all those fired were union members, which, if true, would represent a blatant act of union-busting. The poster went on to say that the studio is now gripped by fear, with current employees worried about their own job security. "Morale in the studio is at rock bottom," they wrote. "When we should be excited about what’s to come over the next year we are now totally deflated and our trust and confidence in others is totally shot."
