HONOR Magic 8 Series: China Launch and South Africa's Wait (2026)

HONOR's Magic 8 Series: A Global Launch, But South Africa Waits. But why the delay?

The tech world is abuzz with the recent unveiling of HONOR's Magic 8 series in China, a significant launch that has the tech community talking. But for South African consumers, the wait is far from over.

On October 15, HONOR introduced the Magic 8 and Magic 8 Pro, along with an array of wearables, all powered by the cutting-edge Magic OS 10, an Android 16-based system with AI and cross-device connectivity at its core.

However, South African fans of the brand will need to exercise patience. Mark Lei, the marketing director of HONOR SA Technologies, revealed the reason behind the delay, stating that it's a matter of software adaptation for international markets. The challenge lies in creating the Google Gemini-powered international version, which differs significantly from the Chinese version's AI.

Here's the intriguing part: Lei attributes the delay to a strategic business model and resource allocation. He said, 'The HONOR business model is unique, requiring planning two years in advance. Due to resource constraints, we focus on the Chinese market first, as there are limited R&D engineers. Once nearly ready, we shift to the international market, which adds several months to the process.'

But here's where it gets controversial. Is this delay a strategic move or an unavoidable consequence of resource management? Could HONOR be prioritizing the Chinese market over others?

In the meantime, HONOR SA Technologies CEO Fred Zhou will unveil the HONOR X7D next week, and the company previously launched the Magic V5 in South Africa in July. This foldable phone boasts a sleek design, a sturdy hinge, a large battery, and dual SIM support, tailored for South African users.

Zhou's vision is clear: 'Technology should adapt to users, not the other way around.' The Magic V5 embodies this philosophy with its practical features and smart software.

HONOR will soon display its innovations at the Africa Tech Festival in Cape Town, including the X7D and Magic V5, offering a glimpse into the future of technology in Africa.
