Raising the Freaky flag: Inside Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan's 22-year bond fueling Freakier Friday's soul

Curtis, Lohan, and their "Freaky" sequel family swap stories on returning for more body switching, new (and old) motherhood, and keeping nostalgia alive for a new generation.

Nisha Ganatra has something on her phone you need to see.

It's a sunny April afternoon in Los Angeles, and the film director eagerly holds her phone to show off a black-and-white snapshot. It's a candid behind-the-scenes vignette of Lindsay Lohan, nestled in a comfortable slump on Jamie Lee Curtis' lap. The Oscar-winning Halloween franchise vet gently cradles her onscreen daughter between takes on set of Disney's Freakier Friday, the highly anticipated sequel to body-swapping family comedy Freaky Friday.

"It looked like mother and daughter, really holding each other," Ganatra recalls of capturing the shot, still fresh in her mind (and heart) over a year after filming. "That's something you can't bring as a director. They have a love and a trust. They bring a joyfulness out in each other, and that's gold."

Curtis knows what you're thinking: This is just "that weird thing when you're doing movie promotion" where the stars fake their fondness for each other. Not the case, she insists, speaking to Entertainment Weekly while sitting next to Lohan in a dressing room on set for a Freakier marketing shoot. Their natural chemistry is as evident during the afternoon conversation as it is on screen in their long-awaited sequel, the product of 22 years of friendship.

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (35)

"I've known Lindsay since she was 15," Curtis explains of meeting Lohan while filming the 2003 film, which became a teen comedy hit to the tune of $110 million at the domestic box office. "That's just an extraordinary thing, to watch someone walk through life."

The actresses' trajectories may have deviated slightly since their initial collaboration, but Lohan confirms she and Curtis remained an important part of each other's lives over the decades — and Freakier Friday's narrative celebrates that power of ties that endure and prevail through sometimes sorcerous hurdles.

Written by Dollface creator and Sweethearts writer/director Jordan Weiss, Freakier Friday (in theaters Aug. 8 ) finds Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) in the days leading up to the latter's wedding to British restaurateur Eric (Manny Jacinto). Tess, now a successful podcaster and author, is still a helicopter parent, though her propellers now pull double duty as a mom and a doting grandma to Anna's 15-year-old daughter, Harper (Julia Butters). A wacky psychic (Vanessa Bayer) senses familial disarray, and switches the duo's minds with that of Harper and Anna's soon-to-be stepchild, Lily (Sophia Hammons).

The blended tribe's soul-switching trials are all by design, of course. As in the 2003 film, the events are purposefully engineered by occult entities to test the bonds of blood. But this time, the ties that bind chosen family are challenged, too — all while the teens at the center resist each other, and their fate as stepsisters-to-be.

Like their characters, Curtis and Lohan — who also produce their new film — have grown personally and professionally since last sharing the screen.

Lohan, 38, is a new mom hot off a Hollywood comeback thanks to a three-picture Netflix deal, and she'll re-team with Disney on Hulu's just-announced series adaptation of suspense-thriller novel Count My Lies.

Curtis, 66, now has an Academy Award for her work in 2022's Everything Everywhere All at Once. But, unlike Harper and Lily, they couldn't be happier to meet each other back in this moment — one they say the universe willed into existence (with a little earthly help from Curtis).

"In every country I went to [promote Halloween Ends], the only consistent question I got was 'When are you making another Freaky Friday?' I called you on the road at one point and said, 'This is all people are asking,'" Curtis says, turning toward Lohan. "Clearly, there was an appetite for this."

Enough so that Curtis launched a personal mission, taking the idea to those who mattered most: Disney boss Bob Iger and Lohan, whom she phoned in late 2022 with a pitch while the Mean Girls star filmed her 2024 rom-com Irish Wish in Europe.

"When Jamie called me in Ireland, I was like, 'Yes, I'm in, let's do it.' It's not very often that you get to work with someone who's been such a big part of your life on a personal level," Lohan recalls, smiling as she stares back at the friend who made it happen. "That was exciting for me, to come back and do a big-screen film with a woman that I admire, that's part of my life off screen. To have that chance again, it doesn't happen much. I felt lucky to be able to do it."

Raising the 'Freaky' flag higher
While fate and fandom conspired to reunite Curtis and Lohan, making a sequel to one of the millennial generation's most cherished comedies was a monumental task that required more than just the stars' desire to work together again. Their mystical movie star chemistry isn't the only thing fueling the film's appeal. Its script has a surprising amount of heart, progressing the stories of these beloved characters rather than simply retreading old ground for those who grew up with the prior installment (and might now be watching with their own children).

"It's the reason you go to the movies — it's the reason you go to a Disney movie," Curtis says of the film's buoyant climax, which, without spoiling too much, repositions Lohan on a musical stage in soaring fashion. "To have a moment where all of a sudden you're going to reach over and hold the hand of the person sitting next to you, if it's your mom, grandma, friend…. You're going to be moved by it."

Yes, beloved characters return (Chad Michael Murray's hunky Jake, Mark Harmon's loving stepdad Ryan, and even Stephen Tobolowsky's Mr. Bates), obvious references are made (Curtis outdoes her "I'm like the Crypt Keeper" joke from the first film by a mile), and the themes are mostly the same.

One thing you won't see, however, is a cameo from Jodie Foster, who starred in the first adaptation of Mary Rodgers' Freaky Friday novel in 1976. ("We begged her. She's not going to do it," says Ganatra. EW has reached out to a representative for Foster for comment.)

And maybe that's for the best, because one of Freakier Friday's strengths — and what sets it apart from many family-oriented sequels — is that, while it's a nostalgic jaunt into the past, it never hits those beats without earning them.

"Every moment is accounted for," Murray feels. "When you get to walk on a set and it just feels like it's home, why would you not want to be there? It felt like an all-encompassing, loving, great dynamic, like no time had passed. Yet, we had entire lives in between. It's a very full film."

Or, as Lohan puts it, Freakier Friday is a "timeless story of dynamics within a family," exemplified in the film's opening sequence. The scene trains on Anna, a single mom dreaming of her past life as a rock star after giving up her successful stint as Pink Slip's guitarist and vocalist for a day job at a record label so she could raise Harper. (Though her former bandmates, played by returning stars Christina Vidal and Haley Hudson, are still a part of her life.) Anna now fusses over her daughter's early morning grumbles, rushes to get her out the door, and even shouts, "Make good choices!" at the bleary teen from the car as she drops her off at school, just as Tess did with her.

Things have changed quite a bit for Tess and Anna, and it's all motivated by the actresses' personal evolution. Particularly, Lohan feels a stronger connection to the story after she and her husband, Bader Shammas, welcomed a son, Luai, in July 2023.

"The closeness that you have with your child, and that bond — how irreplaceable that is, and wanting to do the right thing for your child — is always the most important thing in the world, and nothing can stand in the way of that," Lohan says of the perspective she has now but couldn’t bring to filming Freaky Friday at age 16. "I also didn't have the calmness that a mother needs to have when a child is losing it. Now, I get to play with that. I get to have those moments that Tess used to have with Anna."

Mother of the Lohannaisance
During their interview, it's easy to see Lohan and Curtis' appreciation for each other. Curtis often breaks her gaze to cast gentle glances toward Lohan when she speaks, and her face lights up when she hears Lohan assert her priorities as a new mom.

"Everything I do is [about] what's going to work for my family," Lohan explains of choosing projects at this stage of her career. "If something works around that, it's meant to happen. If it doesn't work around that, it's a no-go."

It's a marked difference from the hectic early 2000s Lohan spent on seemingly every movie poster and tabloid cover. Until her Netflix deal that produced 2022's Falling for Christmas, Irish Wish, and Our Little Secret (also 2024), Lohan hadn't led a feature distributed by a major Hollywood studio since 2007's I Know Who Killed Me. And the new mom knew she was ready for more.

"It's manifestation," she says of Freakier Friday, "because I had this thing in my head during COVID, I was like, 'I want to work with Netflix and do a couple movies, but I want to work with Disney again, too.' It came to fruition because I believed it. Those things are meant to happen. I love my life, and I'm grateful for these moments I have."

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (38)

Curtis says watching Lohan "become a mother and a woman has been a great privilege," and even relates her own experience filming Freaky Friday to that of her onscreen daughter's during production of the sequel.

"I had a 15-year-old and a 5-year-old at home, with three days of prep before the original Freaky Friday," Curtis reflects. "If it filmed outside California, I wouldn't have been in the movie. If it shot in Vancouver, I wouldn't have done it because I had kids. Balancing motherhood is a big part of our lives, but it's also a big part of the movie. It's the story of the movie."

That narrative expands in the sequel thanks to new cast and crew, whom Lohan and Curtis quickly adopted into their expanding Freaky family.

Ganatra, who helmed Tracee Ellis Ross and Dakota Johnson's 2020 comedy The High Note and Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson's 2019 Sundance hit Late Night, joined the project in early 2024 after a series of meetings with Disney and producers. The filmmaker found the idea of directing Freakier Friday "intimidating," but was confident she could "lean into the emotional arc of it and push [the studio] to make it more moving." She was also eager to buck the "trend of the anti-hero" in Hollywood films made by men, which she says "really bums me out" as an audience member.

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (39)

"As a gay person, I know a lot about chosen family. The idea struck me that there's the family you think you are, and the family you could be. If you're afraid to let people in and grow, you're limiting yourself," she adds of the story, which showcases a modern, blended family navigating the universally relatable "messy journey" of parenthood.

Things weren't always so serious on set, though. This is a Disney sequel, after all, and Ganatra's goal was a product that "lifts you up" in the end — and, for her, one that ensures audiences aren't "forgetting the movie by the time they get to their car.'

Table manners
In a mid-film plot by Harper-as-Anna (remember: daughter-as-mom) to meddle in her mother's affairs, she puts her feelings aside and partners with Lily-as-Tess (her soon-to-be-stepdaughter-as-grandma… phew). Together, the frenemies hatch a scheme that, for one reason or another, requires "Anna" to reintroduce herself to her dreamy, motorcycle-riding, ex-high school crush, Jake, who now owns a record store.

In this sequence of comical seduction, Lohan feels free on screen in ways we haven't seen in years, perhaps because of the comfortable, familial vibe of the collaborators around her. Soundtracked by Britney Spears (another nod to the prior film), an electric energy washes over her as the star climbs atop a table and writhes around in front of Murray. But, as Curtis recalls, all that was written on the page was "Anna flips her hair" for Jake.

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (40)

"None of that was there," Lohan confirms. "I almost fell off a few times. I think Chad's reactions were real."

Murray agrees: "I loved watching Lindsay own it. It was like, Oh, there she is."

Ganatra thinks the performance will reposition Lohan in the eyes of the industry amid the ongoing Lohannaisance.

"I feel like people are going to see the Lindsay that has that twinkle in her eye, is a little mischievous, has a big f---ing heart, and makes you smile while watching her," she says. "It's not just the nostalgia of, 'It's Anna again!' It's Lindsay doing what we love watching Lindsay do."

'Freakies' in the family
Lohan also found fans in the film's next-gen stars, with 16-year-old Butters endearingly referring to her and Curtis as Friday's "Founding Mothers."

"As humans, they're so nurturing," adds Hammons, 18, while seated next to Butters on a break from the marketing shoot with Curtis and Lohan. "Putting that kind of person in a position to welcome two new actors into this story worked out great. I got a parental vibe from them. It felt like they always had our backs, always looking out for us."

Ganatra says she aimed to amplify that intimacy with "some weird rehearsal stuff" during preparation, putting her stars through awkward encounters that honed their attention on the physical notes they'd need to hit to make those role reversals feel natural.

"The whole movie falls apart if you don't believe" it's real, Ganatra says.

So, the four actresses rehearsed in a dance studio for weeks, practicing each other's mannerisms; studying vocal inflections; and engaging in what can be described as emotional transference, spiritual osmosis, or a combination of the two. They held hands, stared into each other's eyes for great lengths, and exchanged secret notes written in character.

"They'd give us scenarios to play out, like your first mother-daughter bonding moment: 'You're going to come out, and Lindsay will tuck you in with a blanket.' It built memories to use as a foundation for later," Butters shares.

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (41)

"One time, I got a migraine on set. There's not much you can do if it's not going away with medicine. Lindsay gave me sunglasses to wear during her coverage. I sat slouched in a corner, and she'd squeeze my neck, fully unprompted," she continues. "Mother, literally."

And "Jamie really did act like Lindsay's mom on set," Hammons recalls. "Then, they started acting like that toward us. We're always getting kisses on the forehead or cheek. We slowly became part of that circle, too."

Acceptance of their new brood means that, like most families, the quartet are now deeply embedded in an ongoing group text titled "Freakies," where Butters and Hammons say their onscreen maternal figures share bits of wisdom, updates on the film's progress, and messages of encouragement, while also organizing meetups, dinners, and more.

Hammons emphasizes that she and Butters "literally are best friends" in real life because of the movie, while Butters — who says she and Hammons are building "our own 20-year [friendship]" — makes a sweet promise to her bestie beside her: "Sorry, but you're stuck with me!"

Laughing, Hammons compares the group's relationship to an imagined monument.

"Freaky Friday Mountain," she calls it. "But, instead of Mt. Rushmore, it's Lindsay and Jamie's faces chiseled into it, and we'll be like little stones on that mountain."

Picture-perfect Hollywood ending
Back in their dressing room, Curtis and Lohan are anything but etched in stone, marveling at how they both have evolved since their 2003 hit. The former's voice softens as she recalls discovering the hows and the whys surrounding the latter's permanent move to Dubai in 2014.

"She was looking to find [a calm] place and quiet. That wasn't going to be in New York or L.A., because they're filled with aggro people. It impressed me so much," says Curtis.

"I grew up so much in the public eye that I never really had the space to take time for me and just live a normal life," Lohan explains. "I found it there."

A part of it might exist right here with Curtis, too.

"I understood the depth of the woman you've become. I give you great respect for that," Curtis says, her eyes still on Lohan. "I couldn't freaking do that at your age. I wouldn't have known how to do that. That speaks volumes to the woman she's become, the type of human she is, the type of mother, wife, friend."

She hugs Lohan, whose head finds its rightful place in the cradle of Curtis' neck.

Then, Lohan smiles, unknowingly recreating a version of that photo Ganatra holds so dear as a reminder of the love that went into their Freakier adventure.

Samedi 03/05 : Check-in Disneyland hôtel “Three Magical Days” Disney Getaway Package" + parc Disneyland HK avec Explorer’s Semi-Buffet Dinner Momentous package

Dimanche 04/05 : parc Disneyland HK

Lundi 05/05 : transfert vers Shanghai + Check-in Toy Story hôtel (2 nuits) + soirée Disneytown avec repas au Donald's Dine 'n Delights

Mardi 06/05 : parc Disneyland Shanghai

Mercredi 07/05 : check-in Shanghai Disneyland hôtel (2 nuits) + parc Disneyland Shanghai avec Royal Banquet Hall pack Illuminate

Jeudi 08/05 : visite de Shanghai Bund + jardins Yuyuan

Vendredi 09/05 : parc Disneyland Shanghai

The Mandalorian, Grogu, and New Crew Controls Coming to Smugglers Run

Bright Suns from Star Wars Celebration Japan! We just wrapped our Walt Disney Imagineering panel where I was joined by Imagineers Anisha Deshmane and Michael Serna as well as Matt Martin from Lucasfilm to talk about the creative development behind current and future Star Wars projects at Disney parks and resorts around the world.

In the panel, we shared some exciting news that expands on some of the updates discussed at SXSW, and I can’t wait to share what we talked about!

Take Control with New Powers for the Crew
Starting May 22, 2026 at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run will allow guests to control the iconic ship like never before. For the first time ever, the crew will be in control of their own destination, leading to potential adventures on Bespin, the wreckage of the second Death Star around Endor, or the just-announced bustling city-planet, Coruscant. Another new gameplay addition allows the engineer positions to communicate with Grogu during the mission.

Mando and Grogu Join the Adventure
We’re so excited that these updates debut on the same day as Lucasfilm’s upcoming title, The Mandalorian and Grogu, however, the attraction’s storyline will follow a different path.

In this new thrilling storyline, Hondo Ohnaka has gotten wind of a deal going down on Tatooine between ex-Imperial officers and a band of pirates. There’s a generous bounty for their capture, so you’ll borrow the iconic ship and team up with Mando and Grogu to track them down and explore the galaxy.

None of this would be possible without our partnership with Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). With their help, you are in control of your own destiny on the attraction. This technology is all built on Unreal Engine 5 by Epic Games which are the same tools ILM uses on the Disney+ show, The Mandalorian.

To finish off our panel, the ever-popular BDX Droids made a pit stop! They’re now at Tokyo Disney Resort but will also make appearances at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Paris for a limited time very soon.

Be sure to stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog and @DisneyParks socials for the latest news on all things Star Wars coming to Disney Experiences.

#snowwhite opens today! It’s a little tricky to describe how much we were involved in this project… it was 9 months of crazy film making and the most ambitious undertaking for me personally…

I first met with director Marc Webb and 1st AD (and producer) Ben Howarth to discuss 7 iconic characters and how to film them. The decision had been made to use puppets for rehearsal and in camera, to support the animated characters performances - We needed fantastic performers, who could deliver both the mocap of these characters AND be on set with the puppets, to tie everything together. And the success of the shoot was a tribute to an amazing casting and rehearsal process that found and supported an incredible team.

Coming so soon after the all encompassing Little Mermaid shoot, I opted not to perform, to spend more time with family when not needed - how naive! Though I wouldn’t have it any other way, as the team we put together were the best human beings… and I spent a huge amount of time on set, directing puppets, puppeteering and on camera (in a wig… did you spot me?). Not to mention leading puppetry school, rehearsals, puppeteered animal interactions and so much more…

@stitchesandglue created an amazing set of puppets for us - single operator, 3D printed to exact scale for heads and hands, ACTUALLY light weight, and mobile, modular. And the photo realistic lighting references they produced were UNBELIEVABLE!

I’ve got lots of set illustrations to share over the coming days - and maybe some more photos too - but for now I want to send out so much love to our Super Seven: @sandyscrawls @d_a_v_i_d_birch @leahhaile__ @omariabernard @bournebroad @jaih_betote @domedenowen - you stars I love you all! @nopenother - you made this so amazing. Animation director Greg Fisher, VFX sup @maxwellcwood thank you both! And of course @rachelzegler - who was a trooper, and an absoloute joy to work with

Snow White process - Alongside @wickedmovie this was the most ambitious project I have ever taken on as Performance FX:

7 fully animated characters, who would perform dialogue, songs, choreography, interactions w/ live actors & objects, oh, & all appear in scenes at the same time. Every time.

For the last 10 years I’ve used puppets for animated characters: actors can play with a live scene partner, director can see how will look, they can be lit & framed based on accurate scale. I’ve drawn heavily on the approach we used in @warhorseonstage to actor-puppet interactions for this work, adapting it to the specific VFX requirements on each project. We did it on The little Mermaid, and many other films. But in my first meting with Producers and Director on SW, it was suggested that our puppeteers also performed the #mocap for the characters - and that changed everything!

So, as the amazing @stitchesandglue built our 7 characters, with 3D printed heads & hands, modular limbs & functional control systems, we began casting. Seven characters means solo puppeteering, which brings new challenges. We’re looking for comic actors, who can improvise, create, and for the motion capture to work, are all in the same height range! We found an incredible team (tagged), and got to work! The final voices in the film are the fantastic voice cast, but we performed live dialogue on set, to allow for improvisation and interaction with @rachelzegler & the other cast (see @simonhayessound post for more details)

So ran puppet school with my team, we worked with @nopenother on the dances, learned the songs, and prepped technical puppetry elements - rehearsed and rehearsed. To say we did everything on this film would not be an understatement - costumes dancing, animal reference, eye-lines. We shot the film, and then we shot it again in mocap, with a scaled up set.

Thank you so much to everyone involved! This is a very restrained selection of the wonderful material and work!

First Look at New ‘Disney Hercules’ Stage Show Aboard Disney Destiny
Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (82)

Bless my soul, Disney Cruise Line is on a roll! We’re going “zero to hero” this week with an epic lineup of updates and reveals for the Disney Destiny, our new heroes and villains-themed ship that sets sail later this year.

Last summer, we announced that the Disney Destiny will debut a Broadway-style stage adaptation of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Hercules, and now I’m thrilled to share a first look at the stunning new show that’s sure to prove “whose daring deeds are great theater” for a new generation of Disney cruisers!

“Disney Hercules” will stay true to the story and spirit of the beloved film with a fresh, contemporary retelling centered around the legendary soundtrack. Featuring a celebration of iconic songs like “Go the Distance,” “Zero to Hero” and “I Won’t Say I’m in Love,” this show will present incredible live renditions like you’ve never heard before through new musical arrangements inspired by the soulfulness of gospel music with the energy of a pop concert.

In addition to all of the songs from the film, “Disney Hercules” will include the theatrical debut of “Shooting Star,” a heartfelt ballad originally written for the movie by Alan Menken and David Zippel.

All of your favorite gods, mortals and mythical beings from the movie will be part of the story, many represented in surprising new ways.

Like the film, the Muses will be the show’s storytellers, and their over-the-top personalities and transcendent vocals will shine on stage. High-fashion costume designs will showcase the opulence of the gods of Mount Olympus and contrast starkly with the more understated and humble attire worn by the humans and creatures of Earth.

Award-winning puppet designer Michael Curry is bringing to life some of this tale’s most larger-than-life characters through jaw-dropping puppetry, building on the innovative designs we debuted in “Disney The Tale of Moana” aboard the Disney Treasure last year. Embodying the ship’s theme of “heroes and villains,” our new show will use these massive puppets to represent the mythological behemoths — like the multi-headed Hydra monster — that Hercules must defeat to fulfill his hero’s journey.

Developed exclusively for the Disney Destiny, “Disney Hercules” will be one of three stage shows aboard the new ship, along with fan-favorites “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular” and “Disney Seas the Adventure.”

Entertainment Weekly a écrit:

Welcome to the (retro)future: Inside the Fantastic Four's 'first steps' into the MCU

"The Fantastic Four: First Steps" stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and director Matt Shakman reveal how this movie is different from what you've seen before.

Reed Richards' lab is a wonder.

The home base for the smartest man in the universe has been built out in real life for the new Fantastic Four movie and divided into three sections, organized by the primary colors: The red room is for "research," with tables full of inventions; the yellow room is for "thinking," and is thus filled with blackboards covered in complex equations; and the blue room is for "monitoring," complete with sophisticated screens and communication equipment.

With a setup like this, it's hard to imagine a problem that can't be overcome. "Solve everything" was once Reed's motto in the pages of Marvel comics, and the character has done his best to fulfill that lofty ambition. And yet, something's gone horribly wrong.

"Cut the power! Cut the power!" screams Pedro Pascal, in character as Reed, a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic, the leader of the Fantastic Four. In response to his desperate order, a blinding light fills the set at Pinewood Studios outside London before cutting out and leaving Pascal's Reed and his family drenched in darkness.

"People calling, people calling," says Ebon Moss-Bachrach, sitting at one of the lab's monitors as Reed's best friend Ben Grimm, a.k.a. the Thing. Indeed, lights are blinking all over, indicating that whatever's causing the power outage is also inspiring distress calls from all over the world. For once, the Fantastic Four are at a loss.

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (86)

"We're working on a pretty crucial moment, which in script-writing you call the 'all is lost' moment," director Matt Shakman tells Entertainment Weekly on set in September 2024, during a brief break from filming. "The plan that you think is going to work fails, and you have to come up with another plan. The pressure on our heroes is at its highest."

But if anyone can figure their way out of such a dark hour, surely it's the Fantastic Four.

Reed is brilliant beyond imagination, and Ben is a physical behemoth who will be rendered, when the film is finished, as a big orange rock man. Even in this hour of crisis, they are joined by Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, a.k.a. Human Torch, and Vanessa Kirby as his sister, Sue Storm, a.k.a. Invisible Woman. Together, they are Marvel’s First Family, the group that kicked off the modern age of superheroes.

Now, these classic characters are headed back to the big screen to see if they can inspire the same kind of wonder they did when they debuted in the '60s — and in the process, save not just their fictional world but also the struggling Marvel Cinematic Universe.

To do that, they have to make the future feel new again. And that means looking backward…

Where Kirby meets Kubrick
Reed, Ben, Johnny, and Sue made their first appearance in The Fantastic Four #1 by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. When that fateful issue first hit newsstands on Aug. 8, 1961, there was no such thing as Marvel Comics. Lee and Kirby worked for the Magazine Management Company, whose publisher, Martin Goodman, wanted to compete with rival DC Comics' new Justice League of America series that had become a best-seller by uniting icons including Superman and Batman. So Lee and Kirby made their own superhero team, but with all-new characters who didn’t fit the conventions of the genre.

Gifted with strange powers by a blast of cosmic radiation they experienced on a pioneering spaceship expedition (years before the moon landing), the Fantastic Four were a family instead of a pantheon — they had no secret identities, and weren't always happy. Ben's permanent transformation into the rock-like Thing was a constant source of guilt and shame, while Johnny's ability to fly and engulf himself in flames only enhanced his youthful moodiness. Reed, the stretchable man, and sometimes see-through Sue also bickered like a real married couple.

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (87)

The quartet's relatable humanity was combined with Space Age optimism, embodied by Jack Kirby's magnificent sci-fi visuals for inventions like the flying Fantasticar and discoveries like the extradimensional Negative Zone.

"The blast of colorful heroics against a murky background world immediately set Fantastic Four apart from everything else on the newsstand," comics historian (and former EW editor) Sean Howe writes in Marvel Comics: The Untold Story.

Fantastic Four was so successful with readers that within a year of its first issue, the tiny comics division at the Magazine Management Company had grown into the bustling Marvel Comics, as other new creations such as Spider-Man and the Hulk joined the pioneering foursome.

On top of co-creating those other characters, Lee and Kirby continued to collaborate on Fantastic Four for a decade, publishing just over 100 issues that set the template for Marvel superhero comics as we know them. The team faced supervillains including Doctor Doom, met fascinating allies Black Panther and the Inhumans, and saved the Earth from a terrifying space god. Even today, those issues are still crackling with creativity and energy.

Alas, recapturing that magic on the movie screen has proved elusive. There have already been three Fantastic Four movies (four, if we count B-movie king Roger Corman's unreleased low-budget 1994 ashcan), and none have set the box office on fire. What united them all was an attempt to crowbar these classic characters into a contemporary setting that was inevitably accompanied by cynicism and condescension. The Fantastic Four: First Steps — in theaters July 25 — takes a different approach by returning to the source — not just Lee and Kirby's stories, but their setting and attitude.

So the new film will be set in the '60s — just not our '60s. First Steps is the 37th installment in the MCU, but it won't be set on the same Earth as Iron Man or The Avengers. Instead, the film begins on a parallel world in the Marvel multiverse where history has unfolded differently. In our timeline, the '50s and '60s were full of artists and thinkers who imagined utopian futures full of miracle inventions like flying cars and robot friends. In this world, Reed Richards exists to invent them.

Walking through the extensive sets at Pinewood with the film's costume designer, production designer, producers, and director, one word comes up repeatedly: "Retrofuturism." The aesthetic watchword for this film meant that, in every respect, the creative team wanted to combine '60s period details with sci-fi imagination. To get even more specific, Shakman describes the film's style as "where Kirby meets Kubrick," with the original Fantastic Four comics and 2001: A Space Odyssey as the major visual reference points.

"We knew that we'd be on another Earth, so we had a chance to reinvent what the '60s looked like," Shakman says. "I was really interested in imagining the Fantastic Four being astronauts. Instead of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin going to the moon, what if it was Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben who were really the first to go into outer space, the first to push those boundaries?"

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (88)

Shakman and his team have done their best to make those lofty ideas feel tactile and real. Just a short walk from the soundstage where the cast was filming that climactic scene is a workshop containing some of Reed's inventions. The robot H.E.R.B.I.E. (Humanoid Experimental Robot B-Type Integrated Electronics) is an animatronic android that can zip around on wheels by remote control, and there are two different models of the Fantasticar — one with a completely built-out interior for the actors to sit in, and one stripped-down version for the more effects-heavy shots. The Fantasticar is a perfect example of this film's retrofuturist gestalt of Mad Men-esque period detail and Jetsons-style invention.

"The lines are beautiful and slick, based on mid-'60s American concept cars that were actually referencing European cars, so they have an elegance," production designer Kasra Farahani tells EW on a tour of the set. "And yet there are these undeniably '50s-looking retrofuture elements like the turbine intakes at the front and back of the car, and the bubble dome. Even a lot of the interface controls inside are very much based on more of a '50s look."

Kirby had a generational imagination, but it was rooted in his upbringing in the Jewish slums of New York's Lower East Side (where he was born Jacob Kurtzberg in 1917). Just a little farther from the Fantasticar workshop on the Pinewood lot stands a built-out set replicating Ben's native block of Yancy Street, a fictionalized version of Kirby's own childhood neighborhood, complete with kosher groceries and a synagogue. There are no futuristic inventions here, but the retro recreations are just as important to the atmosphere that First Steps is going for.

"Jack Kirby wrote this character [of Ben Grimm] as a bit of an homage to his father, and to the streets that he grew up on," Moss-Bachrach says. "I'm a New Yorker, and I've spent a lot of time on Essex Street, on Delancey, on Clinton. So it does feel like home to me, and the production did a beautiful job recreating that. It was so cool to walk down and see the hat seller and the fish seller. I was shocked that we were outside of London because it fully felt like the Lower East Side."

Grimm/the Thing is actually the second character Moss-Bachrach has portrayed in the MCU. He previously played Micro, Frank Castle's "guy in the chair" in The Punisher series. There are a lot of differences between the criminal hacker and the rock-skinned bruiser, but there's also a particular through-line between the two that Moss-Bachrach treasures.

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (89)

"I think it's cool that Micro is named David Lieberman, who takes his last name from Stan Lee," Moss-Bachrach says. "Then Ben Grimm is this Kirby amalgamation. So, in my brief two portrayals of Marvel characters, I've hit the two big guys. It's a deep honor that I take to heart."

All in the family
Setting and character go hand-in-hand with the Fantastic Four. As hard as Shakman and his team worked on building the world of First Steps, they knew it would only work if they also nailed the characters at the center.

In addition to being the first modern Marvel superheroes, the Fantastic Four are distinguished from their peers by what makes them a team in the first place. While the Avengers are work friends and the X-Men are students and teachers at a boarding school, the Fantastic Four are a family. Everyone involved knew that capturing that dynamic would be the key to success for this adaptation.

"Casting was the number one challenge for the film," Shakman says. "It wasn't just a search for who was the best Ben and who was the best Johnny, but also who was the best family? Who was the best married couple? Who were the best siblings and honorary uncle? So it's been very gratifying to see the incredible chemistry that the four of them have had since the beginning."

The stars of First Steps should be familiar faces for fans of prestige TV. Vanessa Kirby made her name on The Crown, while Quinn broke through on season 4 of Stranger Things. Moss-Bachrach has won two Emmys for his performance on The Bear (though some viewers might still know him best as Desi from Girls), and Pascal achieved an incredible run of starring roles on popular genre shows Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian, and The Last of Us.

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (90)

Marvel isn't the only studio that's noticed their talent, and all four recently moved into blockbuster movies. In fact, Pascal and Quinn were filming last year's Gladiator II when the latter was going through the Human Torch casting process. Quinn leaned on his costar for advice — only for Pascal to soon learn that he too was being sought. By that point, it was starting to feel like destiny.

"It was a big strange thing that I hadn't planned on happening. It changed the course of my life in a very sudden way, so I really had to process," Pascal says. "I went on a walk with one of my best friends, and while I was talking about it, this charming little girl very aggressively started to sell me lemonade from a lemonade stand. I was so charmed when I heard this voice saying, 'What are you doing here?' I look up, and it's Matt Shakman. It's his daughter! Literally the Sunday after he and I had met to talk about the project. And I had literally just been discussing, 'This is not what I expected to happen, but I think I have to do it.' Then this happened, and as we walked away with our lemonade, my friend said, 'I guess you're doing it!'"

For Moss-Bachrach, getting cast was easy compared to what it took to bring the Thing to life.

"I've never collaborated with so many people — literally hundreds of people, between the animators and the designers. It was a real team effort," says the actor. "Even though a lot of it is motion-capture and created in animation, all of those costume pieces were built. We always had a suit on set that was the actual proportions so we could see how it would all fit. It was an ongoing and never-ending kind of dialogue between me and the designers and the VFX people. It was a unique experience. I felt like the brain: I would make creative choices, and then we'd circle back, and they'd make it happen. I was deeply, deeply impressed by the seriousness and the dedication that all the designers had to make this man compelling and human and inhuman all at the same time."

Instead of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin going
to the moon, what if it was Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben who were really the first to go into outer space,
the first to push those boundaries?"

—Matt Shakman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps director

Moss-Bachrach would do multiple takes with different getups. In the scene EW observed, he did some in a gray motion-capture suit with green dots, and others with different body extensions. In some takes, a stand-in wore a costume built to the Thing's proportions. This helped all the actors remember how much space the Thing takes up while also allowing them to relate to the man underneath the rock.

"The Fantastic Four are very close. They're family before they go out to space and get mutated," Moss-Bachrach says. "So it was helpful that it was just me standing there, because then when Joe or Vanessa or Pedro looked at me, they saw Ben as opposed to the Thing. That's really valuable in terms of intimacy and the way that we behave with each other."

Human Torch also required a lot of effects work, though, thankfully, Quinn didn't actually have to be set on fire…much.

"There is such a thing as too many practical effects," the actor says with a laugh.

Johnny is Marvel's archetype of a "hothead" teenager, but what exactly that means has been open to interpretation over the years. In the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four movies, for instance, Chris Evans played the character as a skirt-chasing scallywag. Quinn wanted to do something different.

"He's a man that leads with a lot of bravado, which can be an affront sometimes. But also he's funny," Quinn says. "Myself and [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin [Feige] were speaking about previous iterations of him and where we are culturally. He was branded as this womanizing, devil-may-care guy, but is that sexy these days? I don't think so. This version of Johnny is less callous with other people's feelings, and hopefully there's a self-awareness about what's driving that attention-seeking behavior."

Johnny is the little brother of the Fantastic Four, Quinn notes. But that's not the only quality that defines him.

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (91)

"He is really smart," Shakman says. "He's on that spaceship for a reason, and I think sometimes people forget that in various comic stories, he's been one of the most heroic of them, even if he's undercutting his heroism at every turn through humor. He's Sue's brother, which means they are cut from similar cloth."

It's just that Sue — and Reed, for that matter — are big examples for Johnny to live up to.

Cosmic radiation grants Reed the ability to stretch his body in all manner of ways, but his brain is even more impressive. The whole retrofuturist aesthetic of First Steps is made possible by his inventions, and Shakman describes him as "a combination of Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, and Robert Moses."

Sue has accomplished just as much in the political realm. As head of the Future Foundation (a concept taken from writer Jonathan Hickman's 21st-century Fantastic Four comics, one of the successor stories that is as beloved by fans as Lee and Kirby's originals), she has helped achieve global demilitarization and peace. When Shakman and his collaborators say the dreams of the '60s have been made real in this movie, they don't just mean rocketships.

"If he is the most scientifically intelligent person, then she is the most emotionally intelligent person on the planet," Shakman says of Reed and Sue. "Between the two of them, they're building an idealistic society."

But as cool as it is to see these inventions and imagine global peace, a movie about a perfect society would be boring to watch. So, throughout First Steps, a great shadow will fall across this utopia. Remember that "all is lost" moment? If Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben have solved every problem on their Earth, then only something bigger than their planet could scare them that much.

The old and the new
Achieving global political peace sounds only slightly harder than synthesizing the decades-long fictional history of Sue Storm. As Marvel's first female superhero, she been part of the Fantastic Four since its first issue — but back then, she carried the relatively demeaning codename of "Invisible Girl," could only turn herself invisible, and mostly functioned as a damsel in distress.

"If you played an exact '60s Sue today, everyone would think she was a bit of a doormat," Vanessa Kirby says. "So figuring out how to capture the essence of what she represented to each generation, where the gender politics were different, and embody that today, was one of the greatest joys of this."

Mother and Son share a Ferry Cabin by madefromlazers - Hent - Rechercher (92)

Over the years, Sue evolved in several ways. Her abilities expanded from individual invisibility to control over electromagnetic light and force fields, making her arguably the team's most powerful member. At various times, she's become a mother, a leader, and a skimpily clad dominatrix named Malice. Synthesizing all these aspects into a single character was a lot of fun for Kirby, who says motherhood, in particular, became the key through-line. Indeed, Sue's pregnancy will play a significant part in the plot of First Steps.

"Matt and I were really aware that there hasn't really been a mother with a baby in these superhero archetypes women have been getting," Kirby says. "One of the things I love most from Sue's history is when she becomes Malice, and all her dark stuff comes out. I was obsessed with that chapter of her life. So I wanted to make sure that there were tones of Malice in there with her, that she wasn't just the stereotype of a goody, sweet mother."

Kirby continues, "I've always been really interested in the mess of femininity, and how can you be both? How can you be all the things? Not just the tough, invincible, powerful woman, but also a mother who gives birth, which is itself a superhero act. I love that these characters are real humans in a messy family who argue and try to work it out and get things wrong."

Although Marvel is reluctant to confirm the identity of Sue's First Steps child, the comics canon provides two possibilities: a son named Franklin Richards and a daughter named Valeria Richards. Franklin's mutant abilities are beyond even the most powerful X-Men, while Valeria has an intelligence that could even surpass her father's. As a result, the cosmic beings of the Marvel Universe make a point of keeping tabs on both of them. Franklin, in particular, has long been a subject of fascination for Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, who does indeed come calling in First Steps.

Reed has figured out space travel, and invented robots and flying cars. But how much of that will help when a massive space god comes to eat the Earth?

"It is definitely a scale of threat which Reed has never experienced," Pascal says. "Even the smartest man in the world is awestruck by a being that outdates his understanding of time."

Galactus was introduced in a two-part comic story by Lee and Kirby that remains the high point of their collaboration. But when he was brought to the screen in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Galactus was rendered as a faceless space cloud — a rejection of the comics' colorful origins. In First Steps, Galactus will be portrayed by actor Ralph Ineson (Nosferatu), wearing actual purple-and-blue armor; the costume workshop on set is full of various attempts at making his signature look work.

"I didn't want to just use motion-capture for Galactus. I wanted to actually have someone there embodying the part," Shakman says. "So we've built an entire costume for him, and we've done a lot of photography testing to figure out, How do you make sure that the scale is correct? How do you film Mount Rushmore?"

Positioning Galactus as the antagonist also distinguishes First Steps since previous Fantastic Four movies all started with Doctor Doom. It's an understandable impulse, since Doom is perhaps the most iconic supervillain of all time — but Marvel's upcoming plans for Robert Downey Jr. as the character freed Shakman to try something else. (After EW conducted interviews for this story, Marvel Studios announced that Pascal, Kirby, Quinn, and Moss-Bachrach will all reprise their roles opposite Downey's Doom in 2026's Avengers: Doomsday.)

"Doom's a great character, but he takes up a lot of air," the director says. "Other film adaptations have done both an origin story and Doom. We're doing neither, and that allows us to look at them from a fresh perspective."

If all this works, then the cast and crew will have accomplished something that no one else has before: making the Fantastic Four into a major movie franchise. That might be a tall order for year 18 and movie 37 of the MCU, but crazier things have happened. Shakman made the MCU viable on TV by directing WandaVision, and Pascal has already elevated multiple other franchises.

"It was really intimidating," Pascal says about living up to Reed Richards. "I relied on the people that I was around to hold me to the experience and help get me through it. Stepping into something like Game of Thrones and then going into the early days of Netflix with Narcos and then Star Wars and the world of video games with The Last of Us, each time I've felt like I couldn't top how intimidating the last one was. They're all scary because you really want to make people happy, especially if it's something that's widely known with particular expectations around it because you want those expectations to be met. You also want to be authentic to yourself so that it can be the best that it can be for anybody who wants to be entertained by a story and travel with us into this world."

Even if they can't solve everything, it's worth a try.

Deadline a écrit:

‘Snow White’, Poisoned By Controversy At Box Office, Won’t Have A Happy Ending With A $115M Loss: What Went Wrong

Disney’s Rachel Zegler- and Gad Gadot-starring Snow White is headed to an estimated loss of $115 million after all global home entertainment, TV and Disney+ ancillaries, according to distribution sources Monday. The loss, which was expected, is based on a final worldwide box office of $225M.

Broken down, the global cume is based on a possible $100M take at the domestic box office, which is under the $115M gross of 2019’s Dumbo (another live-action remake of a classic Disney animated feature), and a $125M overseas total. Snow White, which hit theaters March 21, ended its second U.S. weekend Sunday with $14.2M — off 66%, steeper than Dumbo and the Maleficent movies — and $36.3M global, for a running worldwide cume of $143.1M.

Snow White per our forecasts will clear $295M in revenues from $101M global film rentals, $62M worldwide home entertainment, a $130M from streaming and TV revenues and $2M from merchandise. Note when Disney+ buys the title from itself for its streaming window, it’s not a quick and easy calculation of 10% of domestic box office, which was the case back in the old days of Pay 1 windows. Rather, it’s a more byzantine computation based on myriad factors, I’ve been told. Counter this with $410M in feature expenses that are comprised of a $270M net production pricetag from the starts and stops due to the strikes, and a fire on the UK set, as well as $111M global P&A and $29M in residuals and other expenses.

Keep in mind that the above doesn’t indicated future monies from theme park or cruise ancillaries down the road. Also, realize that once Snow White hits Disney+, it could take on a viewership life of its own and have a second halo that’s unforeseen at this point.

In a battered box office where brand is king, Snow White wasn’t a dumb decision for Disney. It was logical. 500 Days of Summer Marc Webb directing, Wicked‘s Marc Platt producing and Oscar winners Pasek and Paul writing songs. Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig has fingerprints on the script.

Yet, what does everyone learn from this exercise?

Clearly, the age old adage that controversy is bad for a movie’s publicity, and Disney went through this before in the change-up between Lord & Miller as directors to Ron Howard on Solo: A Star Wars Story. The movie’s future box office fate was sealed from that moment on becoming one of the lowest grossing Star Wars movies at $393M WW. Zegler’s comments on Snow White didn’t help, nor did her pushback to trolls ranting about a Latina in the title role (Nonetheless, right wing media and these trolls were never ever going to see this movie, nor change their minds about it), and the anti-Trump outrage in a pro-Trump role isn’t proper business for anyone. But we can’t deny her sublime talent, nor should she be punished. This happens with young stars who are unabashed to share their opinions, having been raised in a social media world.

How to fix? Disney could have screened the movie early for social media influencers to get great word of mouth out there. Still, as we reported, the uphill with Snow White is the fact that it’s a feature take of a classic Disney toon (Dumbo, Maleficient), and those have a very different box office outcome than anything being adapted past the 1989 Jeffrey Katzenberg musical renaissance (Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King). Alice in Wonderland is the exception with a $1 billion global take made with the acid stylings of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp when he was hot as hell in a pre-streaming 2010.

But off that point of Alice in Wonderland: if this feature live action adaptation of the old Disney toon vault (pre 1989) is to survive going forward under the Disney Studios Boss David Greenbaum regime, it’s not in a straight-up take of the IP, rather an avant garde one ala the Emma Stone fashionista punk rock Cruella (which is getting a sequel). Never mind Cruella‘s $233.5M global take; remember, it was impacted by a Disney+ theatrical/PVOD day-and-date strategy coming out of Covid.
